History

Since its founding as the Young Men's Business Club in 1946, this community group initially filled a void for returning World War II veterans who straddled the age requirements for the Jaycees and the Chamber of Commerce. Because of a commitment to foster informed participation in an ever-changing community, the group has remained viable over half a century.

Founding Members were impatient to take actions in a stagnant business environment. First, the YMBC instituted weekly meetings and a Citizen of the Year award. In the 1960s and the 1970s, the YMBC was active in Birmingham's change of government and in efforts for racial progress. Today, the YMBC Civic Forum has a foundation which works to identify unmet community needs and community projects to assist in social improvement.
